Like you, we want what’s best for your furry best friend. Research is currently being conducted into the use of CBD for immune support in pets, or potentially to help dogs with separation anxiety or stress. Here’s a rundown of the best CBD for dogs out there.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN CBD FOR DOGS
Our stringent selection criteria for brands selling CBD for dogs:
Organically Grown Hemp:
CBD should be derived from hemp that is grown without the help of fertilizers or pesticides. Hemp is a plant that actually sucks toxins out of the soil it grows in, which means hemp grown with the help of chemicals could very well lead to CBD that contains chemicals that may not be safe for your dog. Organically grown hemp is grown in high-quality soil so you don’t have to worry about what’s in the final product.
Transparency when searching for supplements is imperative. Before you let your dog ingest CBD, you’ll want to know as much as you can about its origins, extraction process, 3rd party lab test results and more. You can’t always trust what’s on the label – 3rd party lab test results are especially important in order to moderate the exact dosage of CBD for dogs.
Your reasons for administering CBD to your dog could be extremely varied, which is why we prefer brands that offer a variety of strengths and products too! In general, this makes it easier for consumers to find exactly what they’re looking for without having to switch brands.
No FDA warnings:
The FDA served several CBD companies warning letters for making false claims, especially with respect to the amount of CBD present in their products. On testing, some CBD brands were even discovered to have products that contained zero CBD! A few brands on the list were selling CBD for dogs too. This brings us back to point 2 – we make sure to look for all products’ most recent 3rd party lab test results so you don’t have to worry about what you’re giving your dog.
Now that you know what’s important, let’s get to the brands that made our list, in no particular order:
Populum’s website offers a plethora of information you need and ticks most of our boxes. They derive their CBD from local and organically-grown hemp, and they lab-test every batch. They even ship a copy of the latest lab report with each order! Populum also offers a 30-day money back guarantee on their products. We only wish they had more products for pets – they currently offer only the Zen Pets calming hemp oil.
Hempure CBD products for pets have so many great qualities, we don’t know where to start! With rigorous 3rd party lab testing, 2 varieties of products and full-spectrum CBD derived from domestic organically grown hemp, we’re pretty sure you (and your dog!) will be satisfied. You can choose between the CBD pet drops and CBD chews. Their website also offers a lot of literature on CBD for dogs for those curious to understand how it works. Like we mentioned earlier, more information is always a plus!
The founders of 4 Corners Cannabis have been growing cannabis for decades and have developed their products using this experience in conjunction with science. Their website provides 3rd party lab test results for all products and describes their manufacturing process from seed to product in the greatest detail. Like with Populum, we only wish they offered more products in addition to their tinctures.
HempMeds offers both tinctures and treats for your pet. What’s nice about this brand is its focus on communication with the customer, so if you find yourself confused you can feel free to have a chat with one of their representatives! Their website has plenty of information about the quality of their products, but if there’s one thing we don’t love, it’s that they transport their hemp from Northern Europe; it is not locally sourced. Nevertheless, they rigorously test their products for safety and are worth a try.
If you’re willing to shell out a bit more, Charlotte’s Web could be a good brand for your dog. The family-owned business has taken its time to become one of the most recognized CBD brands out there. They have just one product (hemp extract oil) but if you’re looking for quality, it’s a good place to start.
King Kanine ticks all of our boxes! They will leave you spoiled for choice with its ‘King Kalm’ selection of oils, balms, sprays and treats. The company has expanded to over 40 countries, so you know they’re doing something right. Their hemp is USA-grown and completely organic. Independent lab results confirm the quality and quantity of CBD in their products. Make sure you check with your vet before administering their tinctures that contain ingredients such as lavender.
If your dog has gluten sensitivity, then this is the brand for you. Lazarus Naturals’ full-spectrum CBD pet tinctures are completely vegan and gluten free. Unfortunately, that’s also the only pet product they offer. Additionally, their products contain no artificial sweeteners or preservatives, so if going organic is a priority for you, this one’s worth a shot.
Bluebird botanicals’ pet companion oil is available in a variety of sizes, ranging from 1/3 oz to 8 oz, which makes it a convenient brand to sample if you want to try it out. Lab results for each batch are available on individual product pages which is a huge plus for us. However, if administering medicines to your dog is challenging, the current selection of products (oil and capsules) may prove to be a bit limiting for you.
Pure Spectrum CBD’s differentiates their line of tinctures by the size of your dog. This makes it foolproof for pet parents that are just entering the world of CBD for dogs. They also offer capsules for joint support for your pet. With no dedicated page for their pet products, their website may be slightly difficult to navigate, but you can be sure that isn’t a reflection on the quality of their products in any way!
As with all supplements and treats, make sure you check with your vet to find the right dosage for your dog’s age and size. The future of CBD for dogs is promising and exciting. We hope we’ve made it easier to navigate the often complicated jargon to find the best products for your dog.
Charlotte’s Web is on our list despite having received a warning letter from the FDA. We made an exception because the letter was related to do marketing tactics rather than lab test results. In short, the FDA determined Charlotte’s Web were claiming their CBD could potentially diagnose, treat or cure a disease – which supplements aren’t allowed to do.
